Dutch Foods Canada

Our Mission

Our goal is to introduce Canadians from coast to coast to quality Dutch foods, including unique brand name European confections.

Missing the Netherlands? Here’s How to Get Your Dutch Food Fix

To any Dutch expat, the new homeland can be a tough place to live sometimes. The language may be different, and the culture may be hard to get settled into, but there’s one thing that no matter where you are in the world, you can always count on: Dutch food! So if you’re missing the Netherlands like crazy and want to try some of your favourite foods again, take note of where you can get yourself some favourite Dutch food in Canada.

Dutch Food Traditions

With such dishes as stamppot and kroketten, it is hard to be denied the opportunity to experience Dutch culture! But not to worry! You can make plenty of delicious Dutch recipes right in your kitchen with the ingredients you can easily find. And they offer great twists on traditional recipes. One example is stroopwafels made with store-bought dough rather than homemade dough. If you don’t mind not letting on, we won’t either.

Though you live in another country, it’s important to keep the Dutch food traditions that make you who you are alive. To do so, add one or two new Dutch recipes to your repertoire each month. You might even go on to create some new traditions of your own.

After all, food is a big part of any culture—and sharing those traditions with others makes for a great way to connect.

Like Oma

Dutch cuisine is known for being rather hearty and down-to-earth. It’s a cuisine that embraces simple ingredients prepared with care and a sense of tradition. Dutch dishes are often referred to as comfort foods, like oma used to make. It may be cliché, but there’s no denying that when you eat a dish like stamppot or bitterballen it will bring back memories of home—even if you don’t have Dutch blood running through your veins.

Thankfully, Canadian restaurants are beginning to embrace Dutch culinary traditions in an effort to make expats feel at home. The next time you miss Oma’s cooking (which is likely every day) why not try these delicacies out for yourself?

Dutch Food Specialties

If you’re craving one of Holland’s famous delights, or have a special family dish you can’t get enough of, you might be able to buy it in specialty stores. With that said, everything will depend on how committed you are to recreating your favourite recipes.

For example, if you want dutch cheese and bread as well as other groceries like Stroopwafels and frozen stroopwafel-mixes (yes! those exist!), head over to a dutch food store near you; for gourmet dishes made with delicious Dutch staples such as spices and chocolates; or for all your Dutch fine foods.

Quality Dutch Food Products

If you’re missing Dutch food, making a trip overseas isn’t your only option. Many grocery stores carry imported products that are made using traditional Dutch recipes and ingredients. A quick search of your local supermarket may yield a number of fine foods—from speculaas cookies and stroopwafels to marzipan, cheese, and all kinds of meats.

If you live near a Dutch food store, you’ll likely find even more selections there. And if you want a taste of Holland without leaving home, it doesn’t get much easier than ordering fine foods online; most Dutch delis will send gourmet groceries across state lines for just about every occasion.
