Our Story
Originally founded as Dutch Toko, the Hamilton store first opened its doors in 1974. Over the past five decades, it has grown into a well-established and trusted destination for Dutch and European specialty products. Generations of customers in Hamilton and the surrounding areas have relied on the store not only for authentic foods, but also for the sense of familiarity and tradition it provides.
The Dutch Shop Hamilton began as an extension of Dutch Toko in the 1970s, created specifically to support the growing Dutch immigrant community in the city. At that time, access to authentic Dutch foods and household items was limited, and the store quickly became a gathering place where customers could reconnect with the tastes, products, and culture of home. Originally located in the Hamilton Mountain Mall, the business successfully served the community for decades before relocating to its current location in 2014. This move allowed for additional space, improved layout, and better accessibility for customers. The store was operated by Jack Thalen, along with his son Harry and later his grandson Trevor, who collectively ran the business for more than 40 years. In 2024, the store was acquired by The Dutch Shop, ensuring the continuation of its strong legacy, core values, and commitment to quality and customer care.
Today, the store employs a dedicated team of 8 staff members. Each team member contributes to the day-to-day success of the business by providing friendly, knowledgeable service and assisting customers with product recommendations and special requests. Their familiarity with the products and personal approach help maintain the warm, welcoming atmosphere that customers have come to expect.
