The van Zoolingen Family

The Wooden Shoe has been in Victoria since the mid fifties. The store on Quadra Village opened its doors on November 1st 1965 and it has been a staple on the South Island ever since.

Eric and Nicolette took over in July of 2019. Nicolette had already started to work at the Wooden Shoe back in September of 2013.

The couple moved to Canada from the Netherlands in 2005. “We were hoping to start a business here, but never thought that one day we would actually own a Dutch store.” It is a real family business as their 15 year old daughter started to help out on Saturdays. Friend and employee Tynke has been working at the Wooden Shoe since 2018. Her regular day in the store is Thursday and during the busy Holiday Season she puts in lots more hours. She also runs the store smoothly when Eric and Nicolette are taking some time off.  Carmen recently moved to Victoria from Amsterdam and she has been working flexible hours at the store since December 2023. A fun fact is that every staff member speaks Dutch and grew up in the Netherlands, so they know the products well, and the customers really appreciate that.

“We shifted the store from being a deli into an all round Dutch store,  focusing on the Dutch groceries, giftware, housewares, licorice, and cheese.  We carry about 75 different kinds of licorice and over 20 types of Dutch Cheese.”

“We love what we are doing and it is wonderful to hear stories from our customers about their experiences in the Netherlands and Canada. We are hoping to continue to sell Dutch traditional food and houseware, and to keep the “trip down memory lane” alive.”

About Global Reach Confections and More

“We really appreciate doing business with Global Reach, one of our main dutch food product suppliers. From taking over the store in July 2019, our rep Martin has been there to help us from the get go. The office and warehouse in Alberta are wonderful, our orders arrive quickly and are very well taken care of. We look forward to continuing doing business with Global Reach for years to come!”
