Our Story

Maggie Don has been in business for 35 years beginning in 1988.

At the young age of 14, she began her training as a butcher in Rotterdam, NL. Her teachers in Rotterdam taught her how to cut meat with a European style. This prepared Maggie as a butcher, of which she is extremely proud of. She will explain to the customer how she will cut the meat, and which part of the animal it is from. A true teacher of the trade.

Maggie moved to Canada in 1978 and settled in the Markham area, close to Toronto. With her sister Cory, the two sisters began a business in 1981 in Grimsby, Ontario named “Willox Custom Butchery”.  After a couple of years as a butchery, they opened a small restaurant serving croquettes and Dutch dishes.

In 1988 Maggie moved to Peterborough with her husband. This was the beginning of Maggie’s Meat Market. She incorporated both a love for Dutch food and groceries and a knowledge of cutting meat into a successful business.  Maggie’s staff help her to make Dutch sausages, ready to eat meals, and fresh breads and buns for her dedicated customers. Her two grandchildren also help her in the business from bagging dropies to deep frying oliebollen on a Saturday morning.

Her enormous heart and kindness are evident the minute a customer steps into Maggie’s Meat Market.

She is Peterborough’s Oma!
