How Did Your Business Begin?
This world has a funny way of sending you down unexpected paths. For me, the journey took me from the electrical automation industry to becoming the owner of one of the longest-standing businesses in the Bradford community.
Dutch Treats started in 1954, originally as a delivery service using a van to bring Dutch products to customers throughout the area. The business has had several chapters and owners over the years. The original store location was on Holland Street East for 61 years, followed by nine years on Holland Street West.
The business was originally started by Hamstra, followed over the years by D. Teekens, the Medendorp family, and then Rob & Tina Bots. Today, I am proud to be the sixth owner of Dutch Treats. In 2022, I took the leap and bought the business. I can honestly say that I have been having some of the most fun of my lifetime working ever since.
The Holland Marsh is more than 100 years old and holds a special place in Ontario’s agricultural history. It was one of the important areas where Dutch immigrants settled, building homes, finding work, and establishing a strong farming community that continues to this day.
Being part of that history and working in such a unique community has been incredibly rewarding. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to carry on that tradition while also building something of my own.
Customers continue to come to Dutch Treats from north, south, east and west of Bradford West Gwillimbury, and it is wonderful to see the business continue to be part of the community.
Team Size
Today, the team consists of myself and one employee, Marian Savio. During the Christmas season, we bring on a second employee to help with the busy holiday period.
What Makes Dutch Treats Unique?
One of the things I enjoy most is seeing the kids come into the store. There is always plenty of laughter, along with questions about math, science and geography—and, of course, the opportunity to win some Dutch candy!
The new location has also made a big impression. The store windows have been drawing a great deal of attention, and it has been wonderful to see people stop, look, ask questions, and become part of the experience.
For me, Dutch Treats is about more than selling products. It is about creating a place where people can have fun, discover something new, and feel welcome.
What You’ll Find at Dutch Treats
Dutch Treats offers some of the best tastes of the Netherlands and European tradition, including:
✅ Gouda cheeses
✅ Croquettes
✅ Cakes
✅ Dutch drinks
✅ Licorice
✅ Dutch specialty products and treats
Our Suppliers
We appreciate all the suppliers we deal with and the relationships we have built over the years. Global Reach Confections has been a valuable part of the business. One of the things I appreciate most is the Global Reach customer website, which makes it easy to see what products are available and what they cost. In the current economy, having the price clearly available is important. It helps me make informed decisions and find products that customers can afford.
Mission & Goals
My goal is to grow the next generation of Canadian Dutch customers and encourage them to visit the store, discover Dutch products, and enjoy the experience. Most importantly, I want to have fun with every person who walks through the door. Looking ahead, I am also planning to offer outdoor lunches a couple of times a month next summer, creating another opportunity for customers to enjoy Dutch Treats and spend time together in the community.
After more than 70 years of history, Dutch Treats continues to look toward the future while proudly carrying on the traditions that helped make it a special part of Bradford.
